2011/01/24 – Liberty is Really Responsibility

We hear this all the time; that “Mankind is born free,” or that ” Man has unalienable rights to liberty and freedom,” or some other such high-minded pronouncements. We talk of rights as if we know what the word means. What is a right is a social agreement on what someone is allowed to do to oneself or to others? This is also called “freedom” and “liberty,” and is essentially the framework of the social contract citizens have in a society.

Beneath the claims of rights are two principles few people ever consider. One is that ‘freedom” is actually impossible and that we know this, but are willing to live with certain restrictions on our freedoms to make things easier for everybody. We have laws to protect us from each other,  which slides very nicely into the second point: there is a great fear between people who create laws enacted to enforce the  agreement to limit freedom to acceptable levels that make it easier on everyone. Why? Because people cannot handle their own responsibility that any notion of Freedom demands. We know it. We see it. Basically, the only freedom we are really able to express with aplomb is fucking things up for everybody with our penchant for accepting and allowing for things to remain the same (that is, the unyielding, titanic scale of human suffering), so we can enjoy the freedom of  just getting through another day. And the beat goes on…

There is no rights without responsibility. There is no Justice without Equality. There is no freedom until ALL are free. There can be no liberty if one is free to deny it for another. As long as such things occur in this world, we haven’t deserved to use such words in our speech. There shall be no language in our lungs that speak of “rights and liberties” until we have purified these words and give them their true meaning back.
